I’m the best cook at home. The man of the kitchen. The MasterChef. In my household of one.
I remember the days when I was a novice cook at best. Now, I can open the fridge and prepare a meal in my mind, don’t need to read instructions and have personal relationships with my kitchenware. Let me share my top 5 kitchen hacks you need to know.
1. Check if eggs are still safe to eat
One of my favourite meals or snack is curried eggs. Nothing ruins the mood more than eggs past their best before. A great kitchen hack I have to to find out if your shells are full of goodness or time to ditch is:
- Gently place uncooked eggs in a bowl of cold water.
- If they sink to the bottom, they’re eggcellent.
- If they float, there is a gas bubble inside caused by age – so best bin them.
2. Stop cheese from sticking to grater
A kitchen hack that has saved me time is finding a way to stop my cheese from sticking to the grater. A light spray of cooking oil on the side will:
- Reduce the amount of strength needed and pressure on your hand.
- Reduce the amount of wasted cheese that is stuck in the grater.
- Easier to clean up.
3. Pour the kettle safely and easily
I’ve noticed recently that when I pour the kettle I tilt my body with it. I only happened to notice this because I hurt my back at basketball. I wondered if there was a better option. There definitely is. It’s called the Uccello Kettle. It’s a tipping kettle that never needs lifting.
It is ideal for those with limited strength, mobility, visibility and/or dexterity. The kettle looks amazing and is a great conversation starter when ever I have family/friends over. It will definitely make life easier at home is a great kitchen hack.
4. Open jar lids easily
How many times have you had to tap the lid of a jar off the bench or pierce it with a knife so you could open it? This has happened to me many times. Once or twice the jar actually cracked and was then useless to me.
A great kitchen hack I have found is the Uccello Grip Mat. It makes opening stubborn lids a breeze. It’s non-slip and gives extra grip. It’s also small enough to place out of sight it you want an empty counter and flexible to fit anywhere you need.
Last but not least it works perfectly with the Uccello Kettle. It acts as the perfect cup guide. By putting in front of the kettles front feet and placing your cup in the centre ring, you never need to worry about missing the cup. It was Uccello who thought this up as some customers who are visually impaired or had bad depth perception couldn’t use the kettle.
5. Peel potatoes without a peeler
Peeling potatoes can be an annoying and pain filled task to have to work with in the kitchen One way I have used to get stop this from hurting my hands is ‘blanching’. It’s were you boil your potatoes for a few minutes and then you put them into an ice bath.
The skin will separate from the centre so this means you can easily strip off using your fingers. Easy peazy potato squeezy.
