Inflation right now is the highest it has been since 1990, which can mean a scary and worrying winter ahead. It is in stressful times like this that a hot cup of your favourite brew can help to centre you. Yes, we know, it won’t solve your problems but it will give you 5 minutes to relax and help you to refocus.
The average Aussie drinks on average 9.5 cups of tea per week and those over the age of 65+ drink 11 and that’s just on their own. Just think about how many time the kettle is boiled when guests are over? All those cuppas and individual kettle boils add up.
That is why we are here this week, we wanted to share a few top tips on how you can make your kettle more energy efficient and ultimately help to keep the bill down. If you have any other top tips, please feel free to comment on this post below.
How Can You Make Your Kettle More Energy Efficient?
The Silent Kettle Killer:
There are plenty of areas prone to limescale around the country. Many of us know all too well the damage it can cause any of our appliances that deal with hot water. I myself have gone through 2 washing machines and countless shower heads.
Did you know that living in an area with hard water can mean you may pay more for your energy? Shocking isn’t it!
Limescale or hard water can add up to 28% more onto your annual energy bill.
Limescale is the white chalky substance you can see inside the kettle and once there, it means your kettle has to work harder to boil the water. This could mean that boiling will take longer and cost you more. What we mean here is that the kettle will have to heat the limescale and then work on boiling the water.
This is where a great descaler comes in handy and we have found it – say hello to Oust! You can buy it online or in many supermarkets and it works on all appliances that deal with hot water (kettle, washing machine, dishwasher). We use it on our Uccello Kettle here in the office and it comes back shiny and new every time.
Here’s how you can use it:
- Half fill your Uccello Kettle with water and put onto boil.
- Unplug it and bring the body to the kitchen sink.
- Pour your Oust sachet into the water and leave for 10 minutes.
- Rinse and boil again with clean water.
- Rinse one last time and voila. Good as new.
While You’re There:
Whether it’s your morning lemon zinger or your evening oolong, you can save money and make your kettle more energy efficient by asking around if anyone else would like to join you while you’re there. This means, you are only popping the kettle on the once and you can avoid multiple boils.
We know, it can be annoying to have to take a tea/coffee order when all you want to do is cut and run with your own. But just think, it will catch on and the next time the kettle is on, they will return the favour.
Only What Your Need:
It’s a habit, we are all guilty of it. We run to the sink and fill the kettle by eye. Sadly, those extra millilitres could be costing you. It costs more to boil a full kettle of water and if it’s going to sit there and just cool down again, aren’t you just wasting electricity and money?
One top tip we use ourselves is to fill the kettle with a cup or a small jug with exactly what we need. This way we are only boiling what is needed and saving those precious pennies and kilowatts.
Combine this method with the ”while you’re there” one and you are certainly on the right track.
Lastly, mistakes can happen, if you happen to overfill the kettle why not pop the extra in an insulated flask or a hot water bottle? You can have water ready for your next cup or have the hot water bottle resting on your cold feet. Win Win!
Before the heavy cold kicks in, maybe it’s time to get yourself a swanky new kettle? If you or someone you know is struggling with the lifting and pouring of the kettle at home, why not try our the Uccello Kettle? Click Here Now to Learn More.
