During the Winter it can be hard to stay motivated and keep ourselves active. When the weather isn’t as delightful as we would wish, we tend to cozy up at home in front of the TV with a few nibbles.
Unfortunately, the cold can cause arthritis pain to rear its ugly head and a lack of exercise can have a negative effect on both our mental and physical wellbeing. This is why it’s crucial we keep active all year long.
Let’s look into some creative ways we can keep active at home this Winter, no need to worry about going out into the cold. Please do feel free to comment on more activities that help you keep active during the winter months.
Online Exercise Classes
Thanks to the internet, you don’t even need to leave the house for a full workout. COVID-19 has pushed the world to become even more digital. Now is a great time to take full advantage of this with the many online exercise classes. The great thing here is, on YouTube they are free. You can stop and start when you like and if you are not a fan there are many more out there.
Why not try some of these to warm-up:
- Active Seniors Online Exercise Class
- Go4Life – 15-minute Workout for older adults
- Body Coach Low Impact Workout for Seniors
Mixing it Up
Small bursts of activity like dancing, cleaning, gardening, or walking can help keep you active and alert all day. Make sure not to overdo it. Exercise is not meant to leave you in pain or feeling uncomfortable. Small steps first and see what works for you.
Mind & Body
Exercising at home doesn’t need to be a chore. There is no law against watching TV, listening to the radio, or a podcast while you do it. Honestly, it may even make the exercise activity feel easier. Next time your soap is on or your favorite talk show is about to go live, why not mix it up and do some exercise routine at the same time.
R&R:
A lot of us do forget that the cool down after a workout or exercise is just as important. You will need to work on your stretches to help relax your muscles, calm your heart rate and let your body relax.
How you relax is 100% up to you, personally, I’m partial to a hot chocolate and perhaps a sweet treat. Making a hot chocolate is made even easier when I use the easy pour, Uccello Kettle.
Remember: When it comes to living with arthritis, limited strength, and/or mobility anything new such as exercise routines should really be run by your doctor first. If they don’t agree with the new routine, they certainly can guide you towards a better program.
