Not too long ago our team at our gifted one of our Uccello Kettles to a young boy named Jack.
Jack, who was 10 at the time was facing a number of daily lifestyle challenges. He has limited and restricted use of his right arm and has been under the care of an amazing Occupational Therapist; Jacinta Martino-Kelderman who works for Ability Centre in Western Australia.
This may not be a story about a local here in the UK but as we are in that time of year where we focus on sharing and kindness to others. We thought this would be a beautiful story to share.
Independence at Home:
Care, Jacks’ community inclusion worker was busy teaching him to be more independent in the kitchen. These tasks would involve:
- Preparing school lunch
- Making toast
- Gathering snacks for his family
- Using the kettle safely (the prime focus)
When Jack was asked about how he felt about using the kettle at home, he felt extremely nervous ‘’I have never done it before and my hand shook. I was worried that I might burn my hand.’’
Growing in Confidence
Even though his skills have improved, Jack still felt hesitant, he had is worries and fears that there may still be an accident. It wasn’t long until our Australian team heard about Jack and they sent him his very own Uccello Kettle.
They even made a day of it for Jack. There was a presentation and many of attended: Jack, his family and friends, his occupational therapist, Carrie Jacks community inclusion worker, and our Uccello team. Not forgetting some representatives from the local community newspaper; The Post.
Finally, when Jack saw the Uccello Kettle he thought ‘’it’s a bit weird, but it looks like a bird’’. Jack then successfully poured his first cup of tea using the Uccello Kettle. When he was asked about the differences between the previous kettle and the Uccello he answers ‘’With the Uccello Kettle, you just pour the water in. You don’t have to lift. It’s safer.’’
Each year, thousands of children receive bad burns and scalds from boiling water.
Both Jacinta and Carrie agreed that the Uccello Kettle would be extremely beneficial for Jacks’ needs in the kitchen. In fact, Carrie intends to use the Uccello Kettle to further develop Jacks’ independence in the kitchen.
When Jacinta (an Occupational Therapist) was asked about the benefits of our kettle be believes ‘’it’s light. You don’t have to carry the weight of the water or direct your pour. You can concentrate on the level of water in the cup.’’
The Uccello Kettle has certainly given Jack a gift that keeps on giving this Christmas time – safety, security, and his independence.
