Mindfully appreciating the simple things in life is an often overlooked, powerful tool in finding or rediscovering our sense of inner peace and happiness.
Society constantly bombards us with messages that happiness can be attained through materialistic means such as accumulating fancy possessions, chasing wealth, power, status, lofty life achievements, and the ever elusive ‘youthful beauty trap’. Whatever happened to appreciating the simple things in life? As the old saying goes, the simple things in life are often the best.
Stuck on the Wheel
Constantly pursuing fulfillment through such high, unrealistic expectations can leave us feeling pressured, frustrated, and even inadequate. This can position us in a vicious cycle, spinning on a wheel which instead of bringing us feelings of contentment – actually has the opposite effect and entrap us in a negative feedback loop of always chasing more. Does this process truly give us the positive inner feelings we desire or leave us feeling empty?
Monk-ey Magic
Did you know that the buddhist monks are renowned for being some of the most peaceful, content beings on the planet. They don’t chase complicated, materialistic whims. No – quite the opposite. They’ve been living for centuries renouncing worldly possessions and desires; instead pursuing a humble, simplistic and peaceful existence through mindfulness.
Slow… It… Down…
Now we’re not suggesting you go to the extremes of a monastic lifestyle, although there is a lot we can learn by engaging the principles of mindfulness in our daily lives.
Mindfulness is all about being fully present and engaging in the moment. It’s also being aware of our thoughts and emotions but without judging or allowing them to distract us from our simple pleasures. Smell The Roses
Whilst applying a mindful approach toward the simple things in life, let’s explore some ideas and activities that we can draw peace and contentment from every day:
- Practice Gratitude: Being grateful for even the smallest things, perhaps even start a daily gratitude journal.
- Nature: Get out in nature if you can. Appreciate the sunshine or breeze on your face. Admire and wonder at the moon and stars. Even simply watching a beautiful sunrise or sunset can do the trick.
- Indulge: Enjoy a nice warm shower or bath. Rub some scented cream into your skin. Eat some of your favourite comfort food while watching your favourite TV show.
- Loved Ones: Spend quality time with friends or family. Enjoy a warm hug or a simple touch of a hand. Observe the joy as children play. Cuddle a soft toy.
- Practice Random Acts of Kindness: Smile at a stranger. Ask someone else how they are. Donate to charity. Call/text/visit someone who may be lonely.
- The Arts: Get creative by doing some drawing or colouring in. Make a collage with pleasing images. Listen to relaxing music. Write or read a story. Have a dance!
Whatever Simple Things You Choose…
Whatever simple things you choose to mindfully enjoy, remember to slow… it… down.
Allow yourself to be fully present and awaken that inner sense of awareness of the beauty to be found all around us. There is an appreciation to be had in each and every moment.
And naturally, one of the simplest things we can all enjoy is that nice warm cuppa made from our Uccello Kettle….so enjoy!
